Job Summary

The City of Virginia Beach Public Library is seeking a highly skilled Librarian I - Youth to provide exceptional library services to internal and external customers. This role requires a strong passion for working with youth and a commitment to promoting literacy and lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging programs and services for children and young adults, including storytimes, book clubs, and other activities.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to customers of all ages, using a variety of resources and technologies.
  • Collaborate with community partners to provide programming and resources that support lifelong learning.
  • Maintain an up-to-date awareness of popular authors, materials, and culture, as well as current events and trends.
  • Instruct customers in the use of library resources and equipment, including the online catalog and digital databases.
  • Assist with selecting and evaluating materials for the library's collection, including children's books, young adult literature, and other resources.
  • Track and collect data to measure services and program effectiveness.
  • Perform other job duties as required, including working rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
Requirements
  • Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
  • Ability to obtain a MLIS within 12 months of hire date.
  • Three years' experience providing direct customer service in a library or bookstore environment.
  • At least one year of experience working with youth.
  • Experience with planning and evaluating programs for customers of all ages and abilities.
  • Experience with building and maintaining collaborative relationships, teamwork, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience planning, implementing, and evaluating outreach programs for customers of all ages and abilities.
  • Experience with the use of online library catalog, library databases, and business productivity applications.
  • Experience with initiating, building, and/or maintaining positive relationships with community groups, schools, or other organizations/departments.
