Job Summary

Washington University in St. Louis seeks a highly motivated Laboratory Animal Technician I to provide and document care and husbandry for rodent animal species in accordance with departmental procedures and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides and documents daily husbandry care to rodents in the vivarium, including provision of feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment.
  • Sanitizes and maintains rodent colony rooms, including sweeping and mopping of animal quarters, rotating animal cages, and disinfecting all areas in the room.
  • Monitors behaviors, illness, or death in animals and reports to Supervisor, Facility Manager, or DCM Veterinarian in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains record keeping of daily animal census and sanitation of animal room.
Working Conditions

The Laboratory Animal Technician I will work in a stockroom or warehouse environment, requiring extensive safety training. The position involves exposure to chemicals, high noise levels, and physical effort, including standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping, and repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movement.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
  • Animal Care Learning Program - Purina Institute within 6 months.
  • No specific work experience is required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
  • Laboratory Animal Care (1 Year).
