The Paramedic Response Technician (PRT) is responsible for responding to urgent calls to deliver prompt and effective medical assistance to individuals facing critical health situations, as well as facilitating their transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.
Upon receiving an emergency notification, the PRT operates the emergency vehicle to the specified location, utilizing the quickest route while adhering to traffic laws and safety regulations.
The PRT:
- operates effectively in high-pressure environments;
- possesses knowledge of stress management techniques to maintain personal health;
- understands the principles of body substance isolation;
- is familiar with fundamental medical-legal guidelines;
- works within the defined scope of practice as established by relevant regulatory bodies;
- follows protocols for handling deceased individuals, notifying appropriate authorities, and securing the scene.
- Upon arrival at an emergency site, the PRT ensures the vehicle is parked safely to prevent further harm. Before initiating patient care, the PRT assesses the scene to confirm safety, identify the nature of the emergency, count the number of patients, and request additional assistance if needed. In the absence of law enforcement, the PRT establishes a secure traffic environment by deploying warning devices and redirecting traffic to protect the injured and those providing assistance. The PRT evaluates the severity of the patient's condition and prioritizes necessary medical interventions. The PRT provides emergency medical and trauma care to individuals of all ages based on assessment findings. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- maintaining an open airway;
- administering ventilation support;
- performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including the use of automated external defibrillators;
- delivering prehospital emergency care for various trauma cases, such as:
- controlling bleeding,
- managing shock,
- bandaging injuries,
- immobilizing injured limbs,
- stabilizing neck or spinal injuries;
- providing emergency medical assistance for:
- supporting childbirth,
- addressing medical emergencies including altered mental status, respiratory issues, cardiac events, diabetes,
- allergic reactions, seizures, poisoning, behavioral crises, environmental emergencies, and psychological disturbances. Additional care is based on patient assessment and historical data.
- searching for medical identification to guide appropriate care.
- assisting patients with prescribed medications, including sublingual nitroglycerin, epinephrine auto-injectors, and inhalers.
- administering oxygen, oral glucose, and activated charcoal.
- providing reassurance to patients and bystanders through confident and efficient actions.
- avoiding errors and unnecessary haste while working diligently to complete tasks.
The PRT is accountable for:
- lifting and securing the stretcher (capable of lifting and carrying 125 pounds),
- placing it in the emergency vehicle and ensuring the patient is secured
- continuing medical care during transport to the healthcare facility.
- The PRT utilizes knowledge of the patient's condition and injury severity, along with the locations and capabilities of medical facilities, to determine the most suitable destination for transport, unless otherwise directed by medical oversight. The PRT communicates with the emergency department or communications center regarding the nature and extent of injuries, the number of patients being transported, and the destination to ensure timely medical attention upon arrival. The PRT identifies assessment findings that may necessitate communication with medical control for guidance and to ensure that specialized services are available upon arrival at the medical facility.
- The PRT:
- continuously monitors the patient during transport, providing additional care as directed by medical control,
- assists in transferring the patient from the vehicle to the receiving medical facility
- documents and reports their observations and medical interventions at the emergency scene and during transit to the receiving medical facility staff for record-keeping and diagnostic purposes.
- Upon completion of each call, the PRT:
- restocks and replaces used supplies,
- cleans all equipment following proper sanitation protocols,
- conducts thorough checks of all equipment to ensure readiness for subsequent calls
- maintains the emergency vehicle in optimal working condition
- ensures the vehicle is clean and organized in accordance with regulatory standards, decontaminating the interior after transporting patients with infectious conditions or hazardous material exposure.
- Additionally, the PRT:
- verifies that the vehicle is mechanically sound by checking required items as per service management. Maintains familiarity with specialized equipment utilized by the service
- participates in ongoing education and refresher training as mandated by employers, medical oversight, and licensing authorities.
