Job Title: Special Education Associate for Elementary School

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Associate to join our team at Denison Community School District. The successful candidate will work closely with students, teachers, and staff to provide support and assistance in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

* Assist students with physical tasks, such as putting on and taking off outerwear, moving from room to room, and using the lavatory
* Hears students in recitation, reading, and other curriculum tasks, guiding and helping them but not teaching them
* Performs simple errands and tasks for students, such as sharpening pencils and carrying lunch trays
* Works with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher
* Accompanies students to the office or to the school nurse when necessary
* Establishes a supportive and sympathetic relationship with students without fostering intense emotional involvement
* Serves as a resource person for the student personnel evaluation team
* Supervises students at playtime and maintains a harmonious atmosphere on the playground
* Organizes group games and activities
* Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips
* Keeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to date
* Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling
* Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students
* Assists students in the library or media center
* Checks notebooks, corrects papers, and supervises testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher
* Assists with lunch, snack, and cleanup routines
* Assists with wash-up and toilet routines
* Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student
* Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher

Requirements:

* High school diploma
* Ability to work with students, teachers, and staff in a professional and courteous manner
* Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules and lesson plans
* Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
* Ability to operate a personal computer and use standard office applications
* Ability to use the computer to use email, complete required trainings, and enter time tracking information

Work Environment:

The employee is regularly required to sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Other Duties:

The employee will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
