Perioperative Nurse Specialist

Key Responsibilities

The Perioperative Nurse Specialist will be responsible for delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process through data collection and assessment, identifying and determining the priority of patient's problems/needs, and evaluating the process and outcome of nursing care. This role will also involve coordinating, providing, and directing patient teaching activities and coordinating the care provided by health team members.

Essential Job Functions
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to conduct initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyze assessment data, create a plan of care, implement treatment, and evaluate treatment effectiveness.
  • Administer medications in a safe manner consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures.
  • Act as a point of contact for patients' care coordination throughout hospital departments.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement in the department and act as a patient safety advocate.
  • Delegate tasks and functions according to applicable laws, regulations, and standards, taking into consideration the competency of the assignee.
  • Manage the nursing care of the patient within the OR and coordinate the needs of the surgical team with other care providers necessary for completion of surgery.
  • Observe the surgery and surgical team from a broad perspective and assist the team to create and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the patient.
  • Provide preop, intraop, and post-op care, including assessment and discharge instructions.
Licensing/Certification

The successful candidate will possess a current RN license in the state in which they are working or covered by compact, as well as BLS Basic Life Support certification. ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support, PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and CNOR Certified Perioperative Nurse certifications are also preferred.

Education/Experience

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred, and two years of Critical Care experience are also desirable. The ideal candidate will have completed an OR internship program and training in Periop 101.
