Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Construction Technician II to join our team in Cary, NC. As a key member of our night shift crew, you will be responsible for performing semi-skilled to skilled work in the installation, construction, repair, maintenance, and care of our infrastructure, including streets, water, and sewer lines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the repair and maintenance of streets and the installation, repair, and replacement of water and sewer lines and related facilities.
  • Perform various street maintenance duties such as cleaning and repairing catch basins, patching holes, and working on asphalt crews.
  • Make street and pipe cuts using water trailer and saw.
  • Install valves using valve insertion machine.
  • Install, repair, and maintain reclaimed water meters.
  • Respond to service calls on weekend and night duty; assess need for resources and establish priorities; restore water service to customers after hours.
  • Keep records of work performed.
  • Provide assistance as needed to higher level personnel and give guidance when needed to lower level personnel.
  • Attend training on safety and technical subjects.
  • Clean up spills in street after accidents; spread sand for chemical spills.
  • Remove dead animals from the street.
  • Clean out manholes.
  • Repair storm drains, French drains, and sample stations.
  • Load and unload gravel, dirt, and other materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Dig, fill, and tamp trenches and asphalt, ditches, pipe lines, and hand dig to locate utility lines.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, loaders, tampers, and jackhammers in grounds preparation and maintenance work.
  • Set out traffic control signs and barricades; control and direct traffic.
  • Use snow plow and related equipment during storm and emergency response.
  • Make water and sewer taps and repairs leaks.
  • May assist in locating water and sewer lines for contractors.
  • Replace, repair, and install sites to original conditions.
  • Operate all types of construction and utility repair and service equipment, depending upon skill level.
  • Respond to and answer questions from the public.
Requirements
  • Possession of a Class A CDL with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving history.
  • Possession of a Class III Asbestos Certification or the ability to obtain within one year.
  • Grade I Wastewater Collections Certification or Grade C Water Distribution Certification or the ability to obtain within one year.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in semi-skilled maintenance and construction work in the support of street, water, or sewer construction and repair.
Working Conditions

Work in this class is heavy work and requires exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and asbestos. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely, including climbing stairs and ladders and crawling into tight spaces. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform paperwork, read gauges, and make repairs. An employee must also be able to hear, talk, and smell.
