We envision a future where our collective efforts lead to systemic change and justice for all.

Program Overview:
The Mi Espacio Program aims to cultivate the next generation of youth leaders by focusing on high school graduation, post-secondary education, career readiness, and leadership skills for newcomer and second-generation immigrants. By providing culturally relevant programming in a supportive environment, we enhance students' sense of belonging and their academic and socio-emotional development. Utilizing the Escalera curriculum from UnidosUS, we guide participants through their educational pathways and prepare them for successful careers through internships and leadership development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide tutoring support to newcomer and second-generation immigrant high school students across various subjects, including math, writing, science, and English, both individually and in small groups.
  • Assist English Language Learner (ELL) students in improving their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English.
  • Employ engaging educational techniques to foster a collaborative learning atmosphere that encourages the development of essential study skills.
  • Offer mentorship that promotes students' leadership growth and academic achievement.
  • Facilitate workshops on career readiness, leadership, and cultural awareness as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Communicate effectively with program staff to ensure consistent and high-quality mentorship and academic support.
  • Support CASA's mission by encouraging student participation in community events that advocate for civic engagement and social justice.
  • Be open to additional responsibilities as required.

Desired Skills:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Comfortable with high school academic content, including math, science, and language arts; adept at using technology to support learning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a welcoming and patient demeanor when interacting with students and community members.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Reliable and consistent in attendance.
  • Proficient with technology, as most assignments are conducted online.
  • Respectful of diverse cultures and committed to fostering academic success for all students.

Benefits:
Volunteers will have the opportunity to mentor youth, gain exposure to educational methodologies, and acquire hands-on experience in community organizing and social justice initiatives. This role also allows for the practice of Spanish in a professional context while engaging with native speakers. Participants will work within a nationally recognized nonprofit organization that champions the self-determined needs of the immigrant community.

All volunteers are required to complete a background check and training sessions. Proof of up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination is also necessary.
