Position Overview

This role is integral to Mercy's commitment to patient-centered care, requiring a skilled, respectful, and empathetic professional capable of independently adhering to established standards, policies, and procedures while delivering care to patients. The Registered Nurse collaborates with unit-specific team members to identify clinical challenges, formulate care plans, and educate patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate clear and clinically relevant communication with patients, families, and colleagues during handoffs and as necessary, ensuring all parties are informed to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Exhibit proficient assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills tailored to individual patient care plans.
  • Continuously evaluate patient and family needs to provide high-quality care based on a patient-centered model.
  • Utilize critical thinking and sound judgment to implement patient care plans, nursing interventions, and procedures.
  • Maintain precise and timely documentation of nursing care provided, ensuring integration of information for the healthcare team in accordance with hospital documentation policies.
  • Serve as a role model for existing and new staff, fostering a healthy work environment that supports departmental goals and objectives.
  • Show respect and consideration for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and colleagues to maintain a professional and courteous atmosphere.
  • Guide other licensed and non-licensed personnel in patient care as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients of all ages, addressing their needs, including non-verbal cues, fears, anxieties, and cultural/language barriers.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and life-threatening situations within the scope of practice.
  • Promote and adhere to patient safety practices throughout the care continuum.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Provide ongoing education to patients and their families.
  • Delegate tasks to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians, unit secretaries, and other relevant staff.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Incorporate ethical principles and professional standards in caring for patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses, advocating for their wishes and preferences.
  • Engage compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding end-of-life discussions.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including medical directors, social workers, chaplains, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans for complex health situations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong foundation in basic nursing principles and procedures.
  • Demonstrated competency in unit-specific skills.
  • Ability to deliver safe and effective basic nursing care.
  • Exemplary customer service skills, both verbal and non-verbal, along with proper phone etiquette.
  • Foster a welcoming environment for all healthcare team members.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning.
Professional Experience
  • A minimum of two years of experience in oncology, medical/surgical, or hospice nursing is preferred.
Education
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa or a compact state is required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association, is required.
  • Completion of Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training is required, with certification submitted to Human Resources prior to employment.
  • A valid driver's license and personal automobile insurance are required.
Physical Demand Requirements
  • Heavy lifting: Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. to waist and shoulder height frequently.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally to assist with patient transfers.
  • Rarely lift up to 100 lbs. for controlled falls.
  • Able to lift 15 lbs. overhead occasionally.
  • Able to push and pull up to 20 lbs. of horizontal force frequently, up to 35 lbs. occasionally, and up to 50 lbs. rarely.
  • Ability to perform CPR.
