Accounting Leader Job Description

The Accounting Leader is responsible for overseeing the accounting functions, including general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, reconciliations, budget preparation, and analysis. This role is responsible for implementing and enhancing department automation to ensure optimum processing and efficiency for the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the organization's general ledger, tracking assets, liabilities, expenses, and revenue.
  • Establish and manage effective claims processes for timely reconciliations and accuracy of general ledger accounts.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes to ensure timely preparation of financial statements.
  • Assist with creating, implementing, and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures in compliance with SOX guidelines.
  • Maintain and review monthly reconciliations to support accuracy of balance sheet and profit and loss numbers.
  • Coordinate and assist with annual audits, including preparation and fieldwork.
  • Maintain required investment statements and fixed asset supporting documentation for audits.
  • Assist with financial statement preparation, report development, and budget analysis.
  • Prepare monthly reimbursement requests for federal and state programs.
  • Maintain the schedule of federal and state expenditures.
  • Maintain all required grant documentation.
  • Prepare monthly roll forward of fixed asset additions, disposals, and depreciation.
  • Prepare monthly roll forward of investment purchases, sales, gain/loss, and interest/dividend income.
  • Maintain tracking of capital expenditures for capex budget.
  • Prepare bi-weekly payroll import file, reconcile to payroll register, and post to general ledger.
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts for all related payroll.
  • Reconcile bank ledger monthly and monitor bank balance daily for proper cash management.
  • Maintain and prepare payroll tracking for department, program, and grant budget and expenditure purposes.
  • Prepare transaction and monthly general ledger entries for investment activity.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage two or more direct reports by providing guidance and/or oversight to employees and/or contractors. Develop and maintain roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Practice performance management in support of employee development, and perform administrative duties associated with being a people manager.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, or closely related field.
  • 5 or more years of accounting experience at a management level.
  • 2 or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GL, A/R, and A/P processes with significant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, budgeting, and financial reporting with significant experience.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:

Certified Public Accountant preferred.

  • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously on a variable schedule based on project demand.
