Job Summary

The Medication Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in providing resident-centered care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse.

As a Medication Assistant, you will be responsible for delivering age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident, as outlined in their plan of care.

You will provide assistance with basic health care needs, including daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, and obtaining and recording vital signs.

Additionally, you will provide psycho-social support and other personal care to assigned residents, including assistance with transferring, re-positioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment.

You will also complete tasks related to food preparation and dining, creating a positive dining experience for residents, and may assist with meals and snacks, providing water and supplements as needed.

As a Medication Assistant, you will administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within your scope of practice as defined by state regulations.

You will document the outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary, and communicate changing conditions, medication follow-up, and care-related concerns/responses to the charge nurse.

You will also collect non-invasive body fluid specimens and gather vital signs, provide housekeeping and laundry services to assist residents with keeping living areas clean and operational, and participate in departmental/organization committees and task forces as needed.

Qualifications

To be successful as a Medication Assistant, you will need to have a high school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.

You will also need to have a minimum age of 18 preferred and prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long-term care preferred.

You will need to satisfactorily complete yearly department-specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits for each year, with a minimum of 12 hours continuing education required annually based on state requirements.

You will also need to maintain all department-specific required certifications, and when applicable, may need a valid driver's license and auto insurance.

Requirements

Depending on the state, you may need to have Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, CNA certification must be maintained with the State Board of Nursing, and successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certification is obtained.

For all Good Samaritan Society locations, you must have the state-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA), and it is assumed that you must have your certified nursing assistant (CNA) certification prior to attaining your TMA/CMA.
