The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Lantheus policy requirements. The position objective is to ensure radiation safety for employees, contractors, and members of the public, through the safe manufacturing and research and development of radioactive products.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine radiation surveys and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards. Collect, process, and analyze samples such as using bioassays, environmental air and water effluents, and contamination wipe test samples following site surveillance, sample identification, and sample analysis procedures and guidelines. Perform calculations using formulae and standard operating procedures and guidelines to determine concentrations and quantities of radioactive material present.
- Experience and understanding with health physics instrumentation to include multi-channel analyzers, liquid scintillation counters, alpha beta gamma counters and gas flow proportional counters. Be able to analyze samples and ensure that compliance and safety controls are maintained and effective.
- Monitor and evaluate individual dose levels using dosimetry. Maintain strict accountability for dosimeter badges and issue reports and assigned doses when dosimeter badges are lost or unaccounted for and not available for processing.
- Complete complex calibrations of radioanalytical instruments, required by MA DPH RCP license conditions and to ensure the highest confidence level with instrument performance and generated data. Assist with complex calculations for dosimetry evaluations for internal exposure, external exposure skin contamination events, environmental impact assessments, and shielding evaluations. Ensure thorough documentation of assessments and related calculations and results.
- Maintain or assist environmental air and water sampling computer database to determine weekly and year-to-date cumulative radioactive material release levels and provide operations groups with timely information. Install, service, and calibrate radiation protection air sampling and monitoring systems and make routine adjustments as required to ensure proper function and response.
- Maintain meticulous and timely records of regulating agency and license-required radiation protection program information and evaluate results of those records to ensure compliance with As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) requirements. Evaluate data to identify trends and deviations.
- Stay updated on current regulations and best practices in health physics and radiation safety.
Training and Collaboration:
- Develop and present radiation safety training programs to individuals and groups, including introductory radiation safety training, advanced training, RP Program staff training, and special topic/audience training as needed.
- Provide functional support to other groups by conducting operational studies, audits, and personnel dose assessments. Identify and recommend procedural and engineered dose controls to ensure ALARA goals. Collaborate with various departments to ensure radiation safety practices are documented and integrated into daily operations.

- Investigate and respond to incidents involving radiation exposure or contamination. Be able to plan and execute safety protocols for spill containment, personnel and area decontamination, and provide detailed risk assessments to mitigate the risk of future incidents.
Basic Qualifications:
- 3+ years of direct health physics experience, preferably within a complex manufacturing or research environment under a broadscope radioactive materials license.
- Master's Degree in Health Physics/Radiological Sciences from accredited college. Eligible or working towards Certified Health Physicist certification.
- Strong knowledge of health physics and radiation protection theory and practice for the use of radioactive material. Proficiency in radiation detection and measurement instruments.
- Strong communication skills to effectively communicate problems and solutions to workers and management. Experience in delivering focused customer service to all levels within the business environment.
- This position is site-based and requires a presence on-site.
