Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Greenhouse and Outdoor Land Lab Assistant to join our team at Joliet Junior College. As a Greenhouse and Outdoor Land Lab Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the daily operations of our greenhouses and outdoor land lab.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Irrigation and Maintenance: Assist in the irrigation of greenhouses and gardens, including weekends, to ensure optimal plant growth and health.
  • Plant Propagation and Sales: Assist in the transplanting and propagating of collections and crops, as well as handle plant sales and customer relations.
  • Maintenance and Record Keeping: Perform maintenance tasks such as weeding, cleaning, installations, mulching, and deliveries, while also maintaining accurate records of crops, deliveries, and chemical applications.
  • Support and Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other members of the college and community to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships, demonstrating cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
Requirements:
  • Education: Currently enrolled at Joliet Junior College in at least 6 credit hours.
  • Qualifications: GPA of 2.0 or above, completing a Horticulture Degree, and willingness to work flexible schedules, including weekends and holidays.
  • Skills: Good oral and written communication, organization, and time management skills, as well as the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience: Some experience in greenhouse and garden-related work.
  • Language Skills: English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
  • Other: Self-starter, able to work independently, and demonstrated multicultural competence.
Working Conditions:

Duties are performed in greenhouses with possible wet floors, high or low temperatures, and high humidity, as well as in the Formal Gardens or Land Lab with plants, water, high or low temperatures, possible insects, and irritants.

Work Schedule:

This is a student employee position that works around your class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and up to 28 hours per week during summer and holiday breaks with supervisor approval.
