Position Overview
The Supplemental Pediatric Physical Therapist is responsible for evaluating patients, creating, and implementing treatment plans based on assessment results. Evaluations may encompass assessments of neuromuscular and skeletal functions. The therapist will document findings, track progress, and provide guidance to patients and their caregivers. Additionally, the therapist will offer recommendations and support physical therapists and management in program development. The role includes mentoring and overseeing the training of assistants, students, interns, and rehabilitation technicians in relation to patient care.
A physical therapist practicing direct access will assess and evaluate a patient's current conditions, which may lead to the identification of movement and mobility dysfunctions. It is important to note that a physical therapist practicing direct access will not diagnose illnesses or diseases. If a medical diagnosis has been established by a qualified healthcare provider, the physical therapist will consider this during the evaluation process.Job Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's or advanced degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited university-based program.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current license to practice Physical Therapy by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners or the Physical Therapy Compact Commission.
- Current Certification in Basic Life Support.
Education: Doctoral degree with completion of a residency or fellowship program, OR licensed therapist with 30 hours of continuing education in differential diagnosis.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current license to practice Physical Therapy by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners or the Physical Therapy Compact Commission.
- Preferred one (1) year of experience.
- Demonstrates a willingness and ability to mentor and train staff or supervise clinical interns/students.
- Provides clinical leadership and demonstrates growing expertise for specific patient types/groups or enhances existing clinical programs for those populations.
- Acts as a clinical resource for hospital or departmental committees/task forces or initiates leadership in ongoing departmental interest/study groups.
- Designs and implements original staff development programs that enhance the clinical competencies of other staff members.
- The position requires occasional/frequent lifting of up to 75/100 pounds and carrying of up to 30 pounds; prolonged standing; frequent walking, stooping, and squatting.
- Fine hand dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to receive and communicate oral and written information are essential.
- Visual ability to monitor instruments, computers, and equipment, recognize alphanumeric characters, distinguish colors, and observe physical characteristics are critical for this role.
- Ability to commit to a flexible schedule and adapt to various patient care areas as needed.
- For physical therapists practicing direct access, a minimum of one year of experience is required.
- Assumes responsibility for patient care, performing comprehensive evaluations with a physician's referral.
- Accurately interprets evaluation findings.
- Completes a written plan of care, establishes goals based on evaluation findings, and develops a comprehensive program to achieve those goals.
- Implements a physical therapy treatment program and provides advanced physical therapy interventions, demonstrating competency in advanced skills.
- Responsible for overseeing patient care delivered by assistants and rehabilitation technicians, regularly assessing patients to monitor progress toward treatment goals, and adjusting goals, plans, or programs as necessary.
- Motivates and instructs patients and caregivers using appropriate methods.
- Communicates effectively with patients, caregivers, and professional colleagues, including physicians and insurance companies, while managing time efficiently.
- Documents appropriately in medical records and completes other documentation duties accurately and efficiently.
- Serves as a clinical resource to staff and participates in departmental committees/task forces, providing leadership in ongoing departmental interests or study groups.
- Demonstrates increasing expertise in treating specific patient populations.
- Acts as a clinical instructor for PT and PTA interns.
- Assists in program development within the department and supports clinical competencies.
- Assists in supervising support staff.
- Actively participates in organized community service/functions as a representative of the profession.
- Presents relevant topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, and university settings as requested.
- Ensures safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all policies, procedures, and standards while managing budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
- Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory and continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals contributing to the organization's success; serves as a mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
- Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences, modeling service standards by providing safe, caring, personalized, and efficient experiences to patients and colleagues.
