Position Summary

The role of the Asphalt Laborer involves executing a variety of tasks on construction and paving projects. The individual will typically operate in a utility capacity, shifting between tasks as project demands dictate. The career path for a 'Construction Laborer' encompasses various roles, including but not limited to: Laborer, General Laborer, and Paving Laborer.

Core Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to all safety protocols and utilizing the correct tools and equipment for each task.
  • Follow company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations to ensure safe working conditions. Report any issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, Safety Manager, or Human Resources Manager.
  • Support the construction and paving crew with tasks such as shoveling, raking, operating wheelbarrows, and safely maneuvering trucks into position.
  • Communicate with equipment operators to assist with alignment, movement, and material handling.
  • Receive daily instructions from the Foreman regarding specific tasks and expectations for each project.
  • Occasionally operate small power tools, such as jackhammers.
  • Handle, spread, and level construction materials as required.
  • Lift, carry, and manage materials, tools, and supplies.
  • Assist in setting up, relocating, and dismantling signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance at scheduled times.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this position, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill each essential duty effectively.

  • A high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Prior experience in the construction industry is advantageous.

Work Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check is required.
  • Adherence to safety guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook is mandatory.
  • Willingness to collaborate in a team environment and assist colleagues or supervisors as needed.
  • Flexibility to travel and work away from home when necessary.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements in designated operational areas is essential.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and/or MSHA regulations is expected.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Understanding of materials, methods, and tools used in construction and paving.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Capability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in safely using tools and equipment.
  • CDL is preferred but not mandatory.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements for this role include the ability to:

  • Stand, walk, and manipulate objects or controls.
  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • Work in various weather conditions.
  • Lift and exert force on objects, with the ability to move up to 10-20 lbs. consistently and 25-50 lbs. frequently.

Work Environment

While performing job duties, employees may encounter:

  • Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and hazardous chemicals.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, and outside weather conditions.
  • Noise levels that may vary from moderate to loud.
