Tax Clerk I

Job Summary:

Cameron County is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Tax Clerk I to join our team. As a Tax Clerk I, you will be responsible for performing moderately complex clerical support tasks involving independent judgment. You will process registrations, property tax payments, TABC payments, and simple titles, applying knowledge of laws and policies to customer circumstances and working to resolve customer issues.

Key Responsibilities:

• Apply functional knowledge to analyze and respond to matters requiring basic knowledge of department policies and procedures.
• Process registrations and property tax payments, determining eligibility of motor vehicle renewals after reviewing scofflaw program.
• Record transactions and maintain manual and computerized journal entries, processing financial reports, including receipts, claims, and disbursements.
• Approve short-term payment arrangements within office guidelines, reviewing delinquent accounts and contacting appropriate party(s) for payment.
• Maintain effective document, file, and record retrieval system, entering data from document receipts into automated record system.
• Compile information using computer systems, auditing data entry reports and printing final reports for other departments.
• Perform general office functions, including gathering information and statistical data, creating databases and generating reports using spreadsheet and database software.
• Provide direction and information to the public on procedures, forms, and regulations, providing public with file information, in person and by telephone.

Requirements:

• High School diploma or G.E.D. AND two (2) years of increasingly responsible office/clerical experience, including the operation of modern office procedures and computer equipment.
• Must have customer service experience and the ability to communicate effectively both in English and Spanish.
• Valid Texas Driver's License and the ability to provide a no criminal record report.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Negotiation experience.
• Call center experience.
• Experience in a directly related function.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

The physical requirements of this position include the ability to lift/carry up to 20-50 pounds occasionally, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment.

This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility and must submit to a Civil Service clerical exam.
