Cytotechnologist Position Description

The Cytotechnologist plays a vital role in the Morris Hospital laboratory, working closely with pathologists to detect abnormalities in human body cells. This position requires a strong foundation in chemistry and biological sciences, as well as laboratory training and certification.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform screening for various diseases using a microscope to detect cellular abnormalities.
  • Interpret cells collected through cytological techniques, such as pap smears and fine needle samples.
  • Collaborate with pathologists to ensure accurate diagnoses.
  • Prepare slides for interpretation and maintain quality assurance for cytological specimens.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biological sciences, or related field.
  • Laboratory training at an accredited cytotechnologists program resulting in National Certification.
  • Experience in slide preparation using a Thinprep or manual method.
  • Maintain National Certification through the College of American Pathologist Pap Smear Proficiency Program.
  • Meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA '88) requirements for testing personnel in a high complexity testing laboratory.

  • Desire and ability to be a part of a healthcare team dedicated to providing patients optimal care.
  • Ability to work closely with Medical Technologists, other technicians, patients, physicians, nurses, and other employees.
