Position Title: Junior Materials Scientist

The Junior Materials Scientist will leverage their expertise in materials and regulatory compliance while collaborating with research and development teams to ensure the safety and optimal design of innovative Sleep & Respiratory Care (S&RC) products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and select new polymer materials and processing technologies that enable novel designs and functionalities in Philips S&RC offerings.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of expertise in polymer materials and processing techniques.
  • Analyze product requirements for testability and completeness.
  • Facilitate and coordinate testing efforts with both internal and external laboratories.
  • Conduct testing procedures personally and supervise test technicians as needed.
  • Perform assessments and testing of materials essential for product development and modifications.
  • Manage project priorities and deliver weekly updates on project status.
  • Evaluate material failures and collaborate with project teams to implement corrective measures.
  • Engage with development teams to ensure product requirements are comprehensive and testable.
  • Organize Formal Technical Reviews with cross-functional teams to strategize and execute plans.
  • Design and conduct long-term accelerated aging studies to assess material stability over time.
  • Work closely with Technical Writers to ensure compliance of product labeling with testing protocols.
  • Adhere to the internal quality manual, including Quality System Procedures and Work Instructions.

Reporting to the Materials Manager, this role involves cross-functional collaboration with R&D, New Product Development, Contract Research Organizations, Regulatory Bodies, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in Materials Science, focusing on product/process development and testing related to polymer materials.
  • Demonstrated experience with functional materials and their integration in medical devices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with various technical disciplines and external partners.
  • Strong skills in root cause analysis and conducting failure mode investigations to support corrective action processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO 10993 Standards for materials analysis and risk assessments, along with knowledge of FDA, EU MDR, and global medical device regulations.
  • Extensive experience in analyzing the chemical and physical properties of materials, particularly polymer composites, for regulatory submissions.
  • Proficient in using testing instruments and equipment in laboratory and field environments.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering, Polymer Science, or related fields is required; an MS or PhD is preferred.
