Job Description

Our team is seeking a skilled and compassionate Nurse Practitioner to provide professional/clinical services to patients in inpatient Psychiatry. The successful candidate will assess and address the need for psychiatric and/or substance abuse treatment, prescribe and adjust medication as necessary, and work with the treatment team to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides professional/clinical services to patients in inpatient Psychiatry, including assessments, treatment planning, and medication management.
  • Serves as the treatment team leader, managing the care of selected patients within established protocols.
  • Leads and coordinates overall treatment of patients, including psychopharmacology, psycho-education, and supportive psychotherapy.
  • Performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including assessments of current psychiatric symptoms, past psychiatric history, and psychosocial and physical health status.
  • Completes initial psychiatric assessments, suicide risk assessments, and other relevant evaluations as needed.
  • Documents patient clinical and treatment status daily for the first five working days and a minimum of three times a week thereafter.
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans, including problem lists and treatment goals/objectives.
  • Provides counseling and guidance to patients, their families, and/or significant others relating to physical health, psychiatric treatment, and progress.
  • Requests and interprets relevant diagnostic and laboratory tests, and prescribes and adjusts medication as necessary.
  • Manages psychiatric emergencies by determining the level of risk and initiating and coordinating effective emergency care.
  • Serves as team leader in psychiatric crisis situations and ensures that patient and staff debriefings are conducted immediately following Code Greys or other behavioral crises.
  • Ensures that patient Behavioral/Safety Plans are in place for all patients, and that team members are aware of and consider patient preferences in responding to a crisis.
Requirements
  • A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED).
  • Current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED.
  • Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
