Job Overview
Position: Senior Tax Advisor
The Senior Tax Advisor is responsible for the preparation of various tax filings including US Federal and state utility, non-utility, sales/use, property, franchise, gross receipts, fuel, and excise taxes. This role involves preparing and reconciling monthly accrual journal entries for all relevant taxes and providing support during government tax audits. The Senior Tax Advisor will engage with management across all levels of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare or assist with tax filings for utility and non-utility taxes, state and local sales/use taxes, state/local property taxes, federal/state excise taxes, franchise taxes, fuel taxes, business registrations, annual reports, tax exemption certificates, and other necessary tax-related documents.
- Review updates from jurisdictions and tax research software to ensure compliance with rate or law changes.
- Analyze facts, research applicable tax laws, develop tax strategies, and present findings to management.
- Participate in state and local tax (SALT) aspects of transactions, including due diligence processes.
- Identify SALT savings opportunities, including reverse audits and credits/incentives/grants.
- Collaborate with business units to address SALT considerations and opportunities related to operational initiatives.
- Initiate electronic payments for all taxes mentioned above, ensuring proper calculations and documentation are provided for approval.
- Support audits related to all taxes, manage relationships with external tax auditors, and maintain a schedule tracking the status of each audit.
- Reconcile general tax ledger accounts, identify discrepancies, and propose corrective actions.
- Prepare tax accrual data and post journal entries for monthly financial closes.
- Recommend process enhancements related to tax duties.
- Assist with any tax department reporting or projects as requested.
- Represent the department and the company's interests before various stakeholders, including other departments and tax authorities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in tax accounting, preferably with a major accounting firm or in a corporate environment.
- Strong understanding of tax statutes and their application.
- CPA or a Master’s degree in Taxation is preferred.
- Ability to evaluate business transactions and communicate the tax implications effectively.
- Proficient in using software applications, including Microsoft Office (intermediate level in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), ERP systems, and analytical tools.
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with business partners and team members.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks under tight deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills to assess business challenges logically.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Experience in the utility industry is preferred.
