Overview:
The Clinical Laboratory Technician II is responsible for conducting intricate clinical analyses within designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks essential for ensuring precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. Professionals in this position are adept at identifying abnormal critical values and adhere to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, they perform clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks necessary for the laboratory's daily operations, including the provision of blood products as required by healthcare personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
• Specimen Collection and Processing – efficiently obtains blood samples through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the operation of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.
• Result Management – identifies discrepancies or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values in accordance with established policies; conducts laboratory tests within designated timeframes; performs testing in various sections including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers in compliance with established protocols.
• Quality Control – conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in accordance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; tracks and reports performance improvement metrics.
• Maintenance and Troubleshooting – performs routine and periodic preventative maintenance with proper documentation; addresses minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; ensures reagents are dated and disposes of expired materials.
• Professional Development – takes initiative for personal and professional growth through ongoing education.
• Training – assists in onboarding and training new staff and students in laboratory practices.
• Compliance – adheres to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.
• Safety Protocols – follows established safety, infection control, security, and hazardous material handling protocols.
• Laboratory Information Systems – utilizes LIS and HIS systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
• Competency Assessment – successfully completes annual competency evaluations by the designated deadline.
Qualifications:
A. Education and Skills
- Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.
- Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holds the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.
OR
- 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours in science courses comprising six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
AND
- Laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.
B. Experience
- No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.
OR
- Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.
AND
- Less than five years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- MLT certification from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS is required.
- If certification has an expiration date, it must be maintained and kept current.
- State licensure may be required in certain locations.
- New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, where applicable).
