Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

Job Summary
This position is located in the Radiology Section of Ancillary Services at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. The incumbent is a staff Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, performing radiographic examination procedures to achieve diagnostic studies for proper diagnoses and treatment.
Responsibilities
- Assist radiologists in less complex fluoroscopic examinations.
- Prepare contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for exams requiring injectable solutions.
- Responsible for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to ensure high acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.
- Practice radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self.
- Maintain records and files of exams performed on patients.
- Edit and register patients in the computerized Radiology Information System (RIS) and work list management portion of the HIS-RIS interface.
- Properly identify patients and images, using left and right markers to prevent mistaken identity.
- Explain exams to competent patients, ensuring they understand the procedures and potential hazards.
- Monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.
- Perform radiographic exams at the bedside for patients unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity.
- Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas.
- Report equipment malfunctions in a timely manner to the supervisor.

Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Qualifications
- Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States Citizenship.
- Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Certification.
- All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
- Education.
- Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Credentialing Standards
Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 5, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
Physical Requirements
The individual must have the physical ability to perform job-related duties which require heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over, standing up to 6 hours, wearing PPE (Lead Apron) up to 6 hours, bending, transferring, stooping, stretching, walking, pushing, or pulling without assistance from another patient care provider or significant other.
