Clinical Nurse Specialist

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a key member of our healthcare team, responsible for providing expert care to patients and families in the adult and geriatric population. As a CNS, you will embody knowledge in a specialized area of nursing and promote quality patient care through three spheres of influence: the patient, nursing personnel, and the organization.
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated CNS to join our team at UnityPoint Health. As a CNS, you will work collaboratively with nursing leadership, physicians, and other disciplines to improve quality patient outcomes and patient care delivery systems.
ResponsibilitiesAs a CNS, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing direct patient education to a specific patient population in order to decrease or prevent symptoms/suffering, improve functioning, modify risk behaviors, and emphasize health promotion lifestyles utilizing teach-back methods.
- Developing programs of care for specific patient populations.
- Integrating theories of health promotion along with evidence-based practice to develop interventions based on the best science.
- Promoting a culture of safety to improve quality of patient care.
- Identifying resources needed to assist ongoing care of the patient.
- Promoting the implementation, evaluation, and application of family-centered care.
- Evaluating patient care outcomes via the quality assurance process.
Additionally, you will exert influence through peer consultation, role-modeling, and education with other nursing personnel to improve nursing practice and thus improve patient outcomes.
QualificationsTo be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Master of Science or Doctorate in Nursing with completion of an Adult or Adult-Gero Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) program accredited by the CCNE or NLNAC.
- Five or more years of nursing experience, with two years in the clinical area of expertise.
- Previous demonstration of nursing leadership skills preferred.
- Certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist by the ANCC or AACN required within 2 years of employment.
- BCLS, ACLS if working in critical care.
- Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
You must be able to communicate effectively with people of diverse professional educational and lifestyle backgrounds, and have knowledge of basic computer skills.
