About Duke University Hospital

Recognized among the top hospitals in the United States and the leading hospital in North Carolina, Duke University Hospital is the largest facility within Duke Health, boasting 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms. Our hospital is equipped with comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic resources, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center.
Role Overview
As a Registered Nurse, you will independently plan and deliver professional nursing care to patients in accordance with established policies and procedures, as well as physician orders. Your responsibilities will include:
- Planning, supervising, and documenting nursing care.
- Participating in your professional development and maintaining required competencies.
- Delegating tasks and overseeing the activities of both licensed and unlicensed care providers.
- Monitoring patient environments and initiating corrective actions as necessary.
- Acting as a preceptor to support the development of fellow staff members.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
To excel in this role, you should possess:
- A thorough understanding of the nursing process and the scope of practice for registered nurses.
- Competence in Basic Life Support (BLS) and other specialized life support requirements.
- The ability to assess the nursing needs of both acute and chronically ill patients.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to remain focused in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective communication skills to interact with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required. Registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing are encouraged to enroll in a BSN program within two years of their start date.
Experience: A minimum of twelve months of relevant clinical experience is required. Exceptional performers with six months of experience may be considered for this position at the discretion of management.
Licensure: Current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina is mandatory. BLS certification is also required.
