Job Summary

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago seeks a skilled Laborer Foreman to oversee a crew of unskilled laborers in general cleaning and grounds maintenance at a sewage treatment plant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign, supervise, and review work; enforce District guidelines and policy; assist in resolving grievances; recommend actions determining employment status.
  • Supervise, plan, and schedule the work of assigned personnel engaged in routine landscaping, garbage and debris removal, facility and tank cleaning, buildings, roads, and grounds maintenance, sewer maintenance activities, railroad operation and maintenance, loading and unloading materials, tools, and equipment, and equipment cleaning and lubrication.
  • Direct assigned personnel in the operation of equipment and tools, including electric pumps, drills, and fans; jack hammers, lawn mowers, and snow blowers; sledge hammers, shovels, picks, poles, and fire hoses.
  • Receive, interpret, and communicate instructions regarding work activities, schedules, procedures, directives, manuals, and rules.
  • Monitor, maintain records, and provide reports on subordinates' work progress and completion, routine scheduled maintenance, and ensure adequate training of personnel as needed.
  • Order tools, materials/supplies, and supervise the inspection and assignment of tools and equipment.
  • Provide corrective action as needed in response to emergency situations, such as malfunctioning equipment, vehicular/personnel accidents, or disrupted operational processes.
  • Communicate on a regular basis with supervisor and other personnel to conduct, coordinate, schedule, and complete assignments.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Conduct and participate in special projects involving operational processes or sewage collection, sludge transport activities.
  • Conduct occasional sample collection.
  • Assist in directing traffic at job locations.
  • May represent the District with job activities in public areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals. May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and five years of general work experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • One year of service with the District as a Maintenance Laborer Class "A" or two years of such service as a Maintenance Laborer Class "B".
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
