Job Summary

The Teacher Performance Unit Litigation Attorney will serve as a legal representative of the Chancellor, performing sophisticated legal work on disciplinary matters and providing training and counsel to school leaders. This role will be part of a team of attorneys handling special disciplinary proceedings as part of a teacher quality initiative and will have the opportunity to work on key policy initiatives in conjunction with the Office of Labor Policy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handles legal issues and cases, including recommendations concerning determining the soundness of charges, preparing specification of charges, coordinating the gathering of evidence, and briefing witnesses.
  • Manages complex and high-profile legal cases.
  • Represents the New York City Department of Education on Law 3020-A proceedings and hearings pursuant to Section 75 of the Civil Service Law.
  • Assists in devising strategies for providing improved support and training to school leaders around evaluation and discipline, and for spurring the improvement or removal of poor performers.
  • Provides support, counsel, and training to Superintendents, Principals, and their designees on disciplinary procedures, with an emphasis on documenting incompetence and poor performance.
Qualification Requirements

Admission to the New York State Bar and three years of progressively responsible United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar. Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of litigation experience.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to rapidly learn provisions of applicable law and regulations.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely.
Salary and Benefits

$106,607 - $111,107. Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.
