The NEST Flight Nurse plays a crucial role in collaborating with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to deliver advanced critical care to patients served by Life Flight Network (LFN). This position entails full accountability for all direct patient care in alignment with LFN's established guidelines and protocols. The NEST Flight Nurse must exhibit strong leadership qualities and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals, both in one-on-one interactions and larger group settings, often under high-pressure circumstances. This role requires flexibility in shift work, availability for on-call duties, and occasional driving of personal or company vehicles as business needs arise.
Qualifications
- At least five (5) years of critical care experience within the last decade, with a minimum of three (3) years in NICU or PICU; at least one (1) year in NICU is preferred. Previous flight experience is advantageous, with the possibility of substituting flight experience for ICU requirements on a year-for-year basis.
- Current licensure and/or certifications, including:
- RN license relevant to the assigned location
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Course (TPATC) or Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum (TNCC) certification, with successful completion of TPATC required prior to assuming independent duties; thereafter, either TPATC, TNCC, or equivalent must remain current
- Certification as a CFRN within one year of hire
- Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Registered Nurse, Certified (RN-C), or Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) is strongly preferred until certified as a Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN)
- Completion of the Department of Transportation Air Medical Curriculum within six months of hire
- Drivers must possess a valid driver's license and a minimum of three years of driving experience
- Passport and/or entry into Canada may be required based on assignment
- Must comply with weight restrictions (maximum 250 pounds fully outfitted for duty)
- Exhibit strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse individuals in high-stress situations
- Ability to work varied shifts and cover fixed-wing call shifts
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Clinical Excellence: The NEST Flight Nurse is expected to uphold the highest standards of nursing practice. In addition to basic critical care competencies, the NEST Flight Nurse is trained and maintains proficiency in the following skills: chest tube insertion, surgical airways, endotracheal intubation, intraosseous insertion, and central line placement. As the senior member of the flight team, the NEST Flight Nurse is ultimately accountable for all patient care provided.
- Collaborates with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to deliver age-appropriate patient care (Neonatal, Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric)
- Works alongside the Flight Respiratory Therapist to ensure accurate and thorough patient care documentation in accordance with LFN standards
- Provides written and/or verbal patient follow-up to referring hospitals or agencies
- Assists with the retrieval and return of equipment to the appropriate agencies
- Collaborates with the Flight Respiratory Therapist to clean and restock equipment promptly to ensure the aircraft is ready for service as soon as possible
- Participates in inventory management and monthly checks, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment functionality
- Engages in the day-to-day operations of LFN alongside the Flight Respiratory Therapist
- May compile statistical data or contribute to related projects as assigned by LFN Management
Safety: We strive to exceed customer expectations through the delivery of quality services.
- Contributes to the safe operation of the aircraft to protect patients, crew members, and personnel on the scene
- Adheres to LFN safety policies and assists the pilot with navigation, takeoff, landing, and in-flight procedures
Business Development: Participates in the formulation of LFN business and operational plans to achieve medical transport service and financial performance objectives.
- Promotes a positive public perception of LFN through personal interactions with patients, community agencies, and hospitals
- Provides flight education to the public as requested
