Job Summary:

VCA Animal Hospitals is seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our Emergency Team. As a critical care specialist, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients and supporting the Emergency doctor teams in creating a positive, low-stress atmosphere for our clients and patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform triage assessments and prioritize cases as they present
  • Manage the ER by assigning clinicians to cases as they present and coordinate timely interventions as needed
  • Abide by appropriate hospital SOPS for infection control when handling patients, providing interventions/treatments, and processing/performing diagnostic testing
  • Communicate effectively with clients regarding the status of their pets and home care
  • Place intravenous catheters, perform laboratory diagnostics, and assist with examinations
  • Induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia for ER procedures and recover patients from anesthesia
  • Perform nursing care of all patients presenting to the ER and run diagnostics, correlating results with the clinical presentation of the patient and notifying clinicians with results
  • Assist the ER clinicians with providing instruction and demonstration of emergency medicine skills to veterinary students, interns, and residents in a clinical setting
  • Develop professional relationships with the CSR team to aid in providing outstanding customer service to all ER clients
  • Enter charges for all triage patients and document treatment sheets
  • Assist in providing clinical support to doctors and other technicians/nurses and provide restraint of patients without risk to patient, self, and others
  • Abide by appropriate hospital SOPS for infection control when handling patients, providing interventions/treatments, and processing/performing diagnostic testing
  • Provide high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients based on attention to detail and utilize monitoring equipment, recognizing trends
  • Assist with clinical procedures and offer direction to others, maintaining a clean and organized work environment
  • Participate in CE for the purpose of personal development and development of a critical care mindset and foster effective communication with both internal and external clients and referring hospitals

Requirements:

  • Current certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)
  • Experience in emergency and critical care medicine
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of hospital SOPS for infection control
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for long periods
