Corporate Chemist

We are seeking a highly skilled Corporate Chemist to join our team at Smithfield Foods. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of chemical analysis of various meat products.

• Sample Preparation
  • Prepare samples for chemical analysis using standard laboratory equipment.
• Product Testing
  • Conduct accurate chemical analysis of products to ensure they meet specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform representative wet/rapid tests, including protein, fat, moisture, salt, ash, insoluble impurities, and free fatty acid analysis.
  • Complete testing within defined limits to avoid invalid testing.
• General Laboratory Responsibilities
  • Calibrate and perform general maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Perform daily housekeeping duties, including cleaning glassware and countertops.
  • Assist with method review and/or modification, new equipment evaluation, and reagent preparation and standardization.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience.
• Knowledge of various chemical analyses associated with food production.
• Hands-on experience conducting chemical testing of meat and poultry products.
• Knowledge of laboratory safety and ability to use basic laboratory equipment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

The work environment will include a laboratory setting with wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, and exposure to chemicals. Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, and smell. Frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds, occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
