Merritt Island, Florida, United States Blue Origin Full time

At Blue Origin, we envision a future where millions of individuals thrive in space, contributing to the well-being of our planet. Our mission focuses on the creation of reusable, safe, and cost-effective space vehicles and systems, all within a culture that prioritizes safety, collaboration, and inclusivity. Join our diverse team of innovators as we continue to write the next chapters in the saga of space exploration.

This position plays a crucial role in the development and operation of New Glenn, a versatile heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle designed to routinely transport both people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar space, and beyond. The first stage of this vehicle is fully reusable, and it has been engineered from the outset to support human missions.

As a member of our unique and highly skilled team, you will take charge of the structural design for both primary and secondary components of the space launch vehicle. This hands-on role requires complete ownership of hardware, from initial conceptual design through to flight readiness.

We seek an individual who can leverage their technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and dedication to quality to enhance the safety of human spaceflight. A passion for our mission and vision is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the entire design process for structural subsystems, including conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing, and qualification.
  • Create and release 3D models, component drawings, assembly drawings, and interface control documents.
  • Conduct hand calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) of primary and secondary aerospace structures.
  • Plan and implement development and qualification testing activities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to achieve an optimized design that enhances manufacturing and operational execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 2 years of experience in aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle, or automotive structures.
  • Practical experience in metallic part fabrication.
  • Strong mechanical design proficiency using 3D CAD software.
  • Familiarity with classical aerospace structures analysis techniques.
  • Understanding of GD&T and drawing standards as per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience in development and/or qualification testing.
  • Knowledge of composite and metallic manufacturing techniques.
  • Understanding of bonded and bolted joint design and relevant analysis methods.
  • Ability to build trust, maintain positive professional relationships, and foster an inclusive culture.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or legally admitted refugee/asylee.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with composite part fabrication.
  • Proficiency in Creo Parametric.
  • Familiarity with FEA software such as Ansys or Abaqus.
  • Experience with optimization and design of experiments (DOE) methods.

Compensation: The compensation range for this role is competitive and varies based on experience and qualifications.

Inclusivity Statement:

At Blue Origin, we are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. If you are excited about this opportunity but do not meet every single qualification, we encourage you to apply. You may be the right fit for this or other roles.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

Blue Origin is proud to be an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. We hire and promote individuals based on their qualifications and performance, ensuring a workplace that values diversity and teamwork.
