General Overview of the Role

As an Animal Control Specialist I, you will operate under limited supervision to enforce local ordinances and regulations pertaining to animal management. This role involves collaboration with the Animal Control Supervisor to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor designated areas to capture stray animals, providing support to law enforcement in situations involving detained individuals.
  • Assist in the removal of animals from hazardous situations, including vehicular accidents, and manage encounters with wild animals that pose a threat to public safety.
  • Issue citations and prepare legal documentation for violations of animal control laws, including testifying in court as necessary.
  • Secure and manage impounded animals, ensuring their placement in appropriate shelters based on their specific needs.
  • Investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect, compiling detailed reports on all cases involving stray or surrendered animals.
  • Provide assistance to the public in locating lost pets and offer guidance on responsible pet ownership and local regulations.
  • Develop and deliver community outreach programs focused on animal care and safety, including rabies vaccination initiatives.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

  • Familiarity with animal control laws and humane treatment practices.
  • Understanding of local geography and safety protocols for handling animals.
  • Proficient in using equipment necessary for animal capture and control.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with the public.
