Overview
The Production Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in designing, documenting, and executing the methodologies and protocols necessary for assembling the organization's products. This position encompasses involvement from the initial project initiation through to the standard operating procedures (SOP) and beyond, ensuring a seamless transition to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of designated projects.
- Develop and monitor capital investment budgets for assigned initiatives.
- Manage and communicate the timeline for capital equipment and address any outstanding issues with the program team.
- Lead the creation of all requests for quotations (RFQs) and equipment specifications for capital and tooling needs prior to SOP.
- Act as the primary liaison with vendors for machining, automation, and capital equipment.
- Ensure the development and final approval of all production processes, including work cell layout, ergonomic workstation design, and line balancing.
- Generate and maintain documentation for prototype and production processes through SOP +90 days, including process flows, cycle time analysis, PFMEA, and work instructions.
- Program torque control systems and develop joint specifications, selecting appropriate error-proofing devices.
- Design the initial layout for the plant floor and manage material flow and storage.
- Procure and install all necessary line-side material presentation and handling devices.
- Transfer all equipment and process documentation to the production facility before SOP, including all OEM documentation.
- Coordinate initial training for new equipment or process changes.
- Review module assembly drawings and CAD models for manufacturability as needed.
- Prepare the site for project launches.
- Assess cost and timing implications for engineering changes affecting assembly processes, space requirements, capital investments, and labor.
- Collaborate with Program Management and Business Development to gather baseline program information, including statements of work and bill of materials.
- Assist the Engineering Cost Estimator in providing assumptions for assembly processes and capital investments.
- Support Purchasing in evaluating new suppliers and technologies to maintain a competitive advantage.
- Offer guidance on equipment and capital selection to the Purchasing Department.
- Provide mechanical engineering expertise to lead the design and development of assembly systems and production tooling.
- Facilitate all engineering-related communications internally and with clients, including technical presentations and feasibility studies.
- Work closely with the program team to develop and launch products into production.
- Participate in program meetings as required.
- Promote lean manufacturing principles throughout the organization.
- Implement process enhancements to boost overall efficiency, including automation initiatives.
- Benchmark industry processes and equipment to incorporate best practices into company standards.
- Address and resolve issues across all sites as necessary, supporting teams during critical situations.
Qualifications
- Comprehensive understanding of assembly requirements for various automotive component systems, with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Experience in implementing advanced robotic technologies in assembly operations.
- Proficient knowledge of manual and automated assembly systems, including mechanical and control systems.
- Strong familiarity with JIT, SPD, ILVS, and batch manufacturing systems.
- In-depth knowledge of industrial safety standards and regulations.
- Adept at analyzing labor efficiencies and capital investments to determine product costs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD LT, and other CAD viewers.
- Self-driven individual capable of working independently and motivating others.
- Willingness to travel as necessary to support production-related activities.
