Position Overview

Role Summary: The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering physician-ordered respiratory care interventions and procedures to patients in need.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Administers prescribed respiratory treatments and procedures as directed by physicians.
  2. Conducts routine rounds to assess patient oxygen supplies and equipment, ensuring accurate documentation and billing.
  3. Communicates patient and departmental updates to incoming shifts.
  4. Sets up and oversees patients on both continuous and non-continuous ventilation systems.
  5. Performs arterial punctures, collects samples, conducts analyses, and engages in quality control and proficiency testing.
  6. Participates as a vital member of the emergency response team.
  7. Executes nasotracheal and tracheal suctioning as required.
  8. May be involved in performing cardiac compressions.
  9. Educates patients on the purpose and procedures of treatments, tests, and equipment.
  10. Documents all relevant therapy details and patient responses in respiratory care records and patient charts.
  11. Processes respiratory care equipment, ensuring proper cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and packaging.
  12. Conducts quality control procedures on respiratory care devices.
  13. Performs basic preventative maintenance and promptly reports necessary repairs.
  14. Maintains a clean, safe, and organized department environment.
  15. Provides clinical training and instruction to respiratory care students.
  16. Adheres to established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, and safety protocols.
  17. Attends mandatory meetings as required.
  18. Assists with deliveries and cesarean sections as needed.
  19. Undertakes additional duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduate of an AMA accredited Respiratory Therapist Program.

Licensure: Must be registered with the State of Missouri and maintain a current license.

Credentials: Registered or registry-eligible with the National Board for Respiratory Care.

Experience: Preferably two years of experience as a registered or registry-eligible therapist.

Special Requirements:

Patient Interaction: Must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.

Equipment Operation: Basic understanding of computer programs and the operation of respiratory care equipment, including ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP devices, pulse oximeters, suction devices, gas cylinders, regulators, and gauges.

Physical Demands:

Standing: Moderate standing required for patient care and equipment handling.

Walking: Moderate walking necessary to provide patient care and education across various hospital areas.

Lifting: Ability to push, pull, or move heavy equipment and assist in patient mobility.

Visual: Good eyesight required for close work, reading charts, and recognizing patients in respiratory distress.

Hearing: Adequate hearing to respond to pages, communicate with patients and staff, and follow verbal orders.

Speaking: Clear speech necessary for effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
