Job Overview

The Catering Service Associate is responsible for executing all front-of-house operations at catered events. This includes setting up and breaking down event spaces, providing table service, managing buffet setups, and serving beverages. Participation in back-of-house activities may be requested when necessary. All tasks must be performed with a friendly and professional demeanor to effectively represent Middlebury College during events.

This position is part-time and does not include benefits. The hourly wage is $20.62.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to instructions and respond positively to constructive feedback.
  • Work independently or collaboratively to ensure proper service methods are implemented for all catered events.
  • Prepare the function room and ensure food service is ready prior to guest arrival.
  • Deliver catering services, including food handling, bar setup, and event cleanup.
  • Understand the flow and direction of events to provide seamless service.
  • Efficiently carry trays of food while maintaining a pleasant and professional attitude.
  • Communicate effectively with guests, fellow staff, kitchen personnel, and management.
  • Possess knowledge of menu items and be able to identify potential allergens for guests.
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for all attendees.
  • Follow the Dining Room Manager's guidance regarding service pace and timing, anticipating needs and resolving potential issues proactively.

General Duties
Take responsibility for the care and maintenance of all catering and kitchen areas, as well as equipment during events. Flexibility is essential, as the ability to adapt to changing circumstances is required.

Experience Requirements
While specific experience is not mandatory, enthusiasm and adaptability are crucial. Candidates should demonstrate their value through an understanding of the Catering Handbook and show consistent improvement in service skills and teamwork to advance within the team.

Physical Requirements
Must be capable of lifting 10-20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally with assistance. The role involves prolonged periods of standing and frequent walking, as well as bending and reaching. A high level of activity is expected throughout the shift, which may include overtime. Shifts may occur at various times throughout the week.
