Job Summary

The Nuclear Radiation Safety Specialist will be responsible for monitoring and controlling radiological conditions in a workplace environment, implementing measures to minimize radiation exposure to workers and the public, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct radiological surveys and monitoring to identify potential hazards and implement controls to minimize exposure;
  • Oversee work involving radioactive materials, ensuring safe handling, storage, and disposal practices;
  • Utilize specialized instrumentation to analyze and track radiation levels, airborne particulates, and radiological controls;
  • Establish and maintain safe means for radioactive material testing, including collection, storage, packaging, transportation, and disposal;
  • Collect and analyze radiological samples to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements;
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert for radiation protection, providing guidance and support to colleagues and supervisors;
  • Immediately notify supervision and prepare documentation of any safety or nuclear safety concerns;
  • Responsible for progress of all assigned work, identifying and solving minor issues, and reporting major issues to supervision for resolution;
  • Evaluate radiological conditions in the nuclear plant and implement necessary radiological safety measures to protect workers and the public;
  • Perform dose rate, contamination, and airborne radioactivity surveys to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements;
  • Provide job coverage for work groups to minimize personnel exposure and ensure safe working practices;
  • Control access to radioactive material through labeling and posting to prevent unplanned exposure;
  • Provide briefings and guidance to plant personnel to prevent unplanned exposure to radioactive material;

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, including chemistry and mathematics courses and training or work experience in radiation protection;
  • Ability to pass knowledge exams and performance evaluations administered through the EPRI process for Standardized Task Evaluations;
  • Must meet the requirements of one of the following standards: ANSI N, ANSI/ANS, ANSI/ANS, or ANSI/ANS;

Competencies

  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans;
  • Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications;
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance as related to piping systems;
