Open Rank Professor of Sociology
Established in 1891, North Park University is a Christian institution affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church, serving over 3,200 students from diverse backgrounds across the nation and globally.
Situated in the Albany Park neighborhood of Chicago, known for its rich ethnic diversity, the university is just nine miles from the vibrant downtown area.
The North Park campus is often described as a sanctuary within the city, providing a welcoming environment for students from urban, rural, and suburban settings.
Chicago, recognized for its extensive cultural offerings and as one of the largest and most varied economies in the world, has been celebrated as the best large city in the U.S. for four consecutive years by Condé Nast Traveler.
MissionThe mission of North Park University is to equip students for meaningful lives of service and significance through a comprehensive education in the liberal arts, professional studies, and theology.
VisionBuilding on our core identity—Christian, city-centered, and intercultural—our vision is to foster a university characterized by exceptional quality and enduring excellence, where faith, learning, and service converge.
Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe College of Arts and Sciences at North Park University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. The rank is open to candidates at the levels of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The department emphasizes a strong foundation in sociological principles, requiring sociology majors to complete four core courses along with electives in four primary areas: social identity, social organization, social deviance, and social change. Approximately 25% of students in the department are sociology majors, while 75% are pursuing criminal justice or double majors.
The successful candidate will teach three courses each semester, with one course equivalent to four semester hours. They will address the department's urgent teaching needs in subjects such as race and ethnicity, social problems, social thought, introduction to sociology, and urban sociology.
Additional teaching competencies in areas such as sociology of deviance, methods of social research, power, privilege, and inequality, criminology, marriage and family, sociology of religion, gender studies, sociology practicum, senior seminar, Africana studies, and civil rights are highly desirable.
Preference will be given to candidates holding a Ph.D. in Sociology with an additional graduate degree in law, criminology, or criminal justice. The ideal candidate will maintain an active research and publication agenda that aligns with their teaching expertise.
