Job Summary

As a Tax Attorney with the Georgia Department of Law, you will represent the Georgia Department of Revenue and advise on the proper interpretation of tax statutes, handle litigation in those areas, and handle appeals before State and Federal courts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Litigation: Participate in hearings and appear in state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals; research and prepare pleadings, motions, and briefs; attend depositions; interview witnesses and hire expert witnesses; participate in settlement negotiations; prepare pleadings and discovery responses.
  • Legal Advice and Representation: Provide legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies, draft memoranda of advice.
  • Research and Analysis: Conduct research on pertinent legal issues; keep abreast of recent legal developments.
  • Opinion Writing: Draft formal opinions in response to legal questions.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement: Attend client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
  • Professional Development: Attend continuing legal education seminars as required; make presentations at same.
  • Travel: Travel, as required by the position.
  • Other Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some tax experience preferred but not required.
  • Litigation experience preferred.
