Department: Geography & Planning

Position Summary:
The Department of Geography and Planning is seeking candidates for two tenure-track assistant professor roles focused on Physical Geography and Climatology. The ideal candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related discipline by the specified start date. Applicants should have completed a minimum of 18 credit hours in Geography coursework or possess relevant professional experience in the field. Evidence of a successful dissertation defense is required prior to the commencement of the position.

Research Specializations:
We invite applications from individuals with research interests in the following areas:
  • Physical Geography: Open to various research specializations, candidates should offer field-based research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Climatology: Open to various research specializations.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
  • Excellence in teaching with a commitment to engaging instruction and fostering mentorship.
  • The ability to attract and retain students in the Geography and Planning Department.
  • Research expertise in physical geography or climatology, including but not limited to biogeography, natural hazards, atmospheric science, and climate modeling.

Department Description:
The Department of Geography and Planning supports over 120 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students, preparing them for careers in various fields including climate science, environmental geography, and Geographic Information Science (GIS).

Responsibilities:
The teaching load consists of three in-person courses per semester, including foundational courses in physical geography and climate science. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and teaching upper-level and graduate courses in their area of expertise, emphasizing experiential learning and real-world applications.

Additionally, candidates are expected to establish a research program that actively involves undergraduate and graduate students. Contributions to departmental service, student advising, and committee work are also required.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field by the start date. ABD candidates may be considered with a reduction in rank and salary, contingent upon successful dissertation defense.
