About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Animal Caretaker II to join our team at UMass Amherst. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing general care of laboratory animals and maintaining animal care facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle, care for, and monitor the health and well-being of laboratory animals on a daily basis.
  • Maintain and operate mechanical equipment, such as cage washers, glassware dishwashers, and euthanasia chambers.
  • Record and maintain accurate records on individual animals, including health status.
  • Observe, detect, and record conditions of animals and animal room environments.
  • Maintain all equipment in good condition.
  • Participate in educational training programs for animal care staff.
  • Provide general technical assistance to animal care supervisors or investigators.
  • Work with biohazardous substances.
  • Restrict and euthanize animals when necessary.
  • Maintain inventory of food, bedding, and other supplies necessary to operate animal care facilities.
  • Train and functionally supervise work-study students.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience working with common laboratory animals.
  • Ability to provide care for laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Ability to handle, restrain, and determine the gender of all common laboratory animals.
  • Knowledge of universal identification systems used for marking laboratory animals.
  • Knowledge of personal hygiene and safety procedures regarding hazardous substances.
  • Ability to functionally supervise work-study students effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University, State, and Federal regulations regarding laboratory animal care.
  • Ability to assist in collecting samples for laboratory tests.
  • Ability to assist in routine medical treatments of laboratory animals.
  • AALAS Certification (ALAT or LAT).
Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift and/or carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Good physical stamina.
Additional Information

This position is considered essential personnel and is expected to report to work during emergency closure periods.
