Alternatively, an Associate's degree combined with three years of relevant experience is acceptable.

We aim to provide educational and enjoyable experiences for visitors of all ages. Reid Park Zoo stands as the most frequented cultural venue in Southern Arizona, welcoming approximately 500,000 guests each year. Position Overview: Reid Park Zoo is home to a diverse collection of over 200 birds spanning 50 species. Our focus is on nurturing parent-reared birds and hand-rearing for an engaging aviary experience. The ideal candidate will be hardworking, detail-oriented, and committed to progressive animal care and welfare, fostering a culture of openness, trust, and respect. Responsibilities include behavioral observations, positive reinforcement training, enrichment provision, cleaning, and collaboration with the welfare committee, supervisory staff, and veterinary teams to ensure optimal animal welfare. The Keeper will maintain daily records, including reports, medication logs, welfare tracking, enrichment documentation, and training records.
Reports To: Animal Care Supervisor
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform daily cleaning of animal habitats, night houses, and visitor viewing areas.
- Provide husbandry care for the animals, including feeding, medicating, training, and species-specific care.
- Complete various reports, including daily animal reports, enrichment logs, and medication logs.
- Develop and implement enrichment activities for animals in accordance with AZA guidelines.
- Utilize positive reinforcement techniques for animal training and visitor education.
- Monitor animal welfare and report any concerns to the supervisor.
- Adhere to all animal care protocols and policies.
- Assist in training new staff and mentoring volunteers.
- Complete all required training sessions.
- Be prepared for variable shift work as needed.
- Engage in formal presentations, such as Keeper talks and special events.
- Respond to visitor inquiries regarding animals, conservation efforts, and zoo operations.
- Assist in the capture and transportation of animals as needed.
- Participate in emergency drills and maintain proficiency with safety equipment.
- Respond to animal emergencies following established protocols.
- Stay current on required vaccinations.
Conduct duties in line with RPZS policies, including expense reporting and cash handling procedures. Deliver exceptional customer service as a fundamental aspect of all responsibilities. Maintain accurate animal records using various software programs.
Preferred Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, animal studies, or zoology with two years of avian care experience at an AZA accredited facility, or an Associate's degree with three years of relevant experience.
- COVID booster received after September 2022.
- Willingness to undergo an annual TB skin test.
- Valid driver's license.
- Consistent physical attendance at work.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Prepared for the inherent hazards of caring for exotic and potentially dangerous animals.
- Demonstrated skills in critical analysis, customer service, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and team collaboration.
- Able to manage stressful situations and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with colleagues, volunteers, and community partners.
- Flexibility to work weekends, special events, and holidays as required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Capable of bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Proficient in using hands for repetitive motions and tool control.
Compensation: The hiring range for this position is $20.69 per hour.
