Job Summary

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking highly motivated and talented undergraduate students for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program. As a SURF participant, you will have the opportunity to work alongside internationally recognized NIST scientists on cutting-edge research projects, gaining valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the latest advancements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct research under the guidance of a NIST scientist or engineer
  • Develop and implement research projects, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation
  • Present research findings through oral and written reports
  • Collaborate with NIST staff and other SURF participants on research projects
  • Participate in professional development activities, including workshops and seminars
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university in the U.S. or U.S. territories
  • Strong academic record, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Interest in pursuing a STEM graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.)
  • Ability to commit to 11 full continuous weeks (Monday through Friday) during the summer
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in research or laboratory settings
  • Strong computer and laboratory skills
  • Interest in conducting technical research in a federal laboratory
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
