Description

As a vital member of the community, the School Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring the secure passage of school-aged children at designated crosswalks within school zones. Officers are assigned to various educational institutions, including elementary, junior high, and some high schools. This role involves working in split shifts, with durations ranging from 1 hour to 6.5 hours per day, aligning with school schedules.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain a reliable presence at assigned posts during critical school hours.

• Engage in specialized training programs, including the Florida School Crossing Guard Training Program (FDOT), and participate in mandatory annual training sessions.

• Oversee school crossing areas, ensuring that students can cross safely and efficiently.

• Educate children on safe crossing practices and procedures.

• Utilize safety gear such as reflective vests, stop paddles, and whistles to facilitate safe crossings.

• Monitor student behavior to ensure compliance with safety protocols.

• Report any traffic violations that jeopardize the safety of children to supervisors or law enforcement.

• Arrive punctually for scheduled posts and maintain possession of all necessary safety equipment.

• Process relevant documents and communications in accordance with agency policies.

• Collaborate with colleagues through cross-training and support during peak times.

• Report safety hazards to supervisors or emergency services as necessary.

• Conduct regular checks for safety issues and report maintenance needs promptly.

• Adhere to attendance policies, including timely notification of absences.

• Regularly monitor communications and respond in a professional manner.

• Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor while interacting with the public.

• Foster positive relationships with coworkers and other departments to enhance service delivery.

• Demonstrate respect for diverse backgrounds in all interactions.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Good physical condition, including vision, hearing, and mobility;
  • Effective communication skills;
  • Dependability;
  • Able to work split shifts;
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including polygraph and drug testing;
  • Proficiency in reading, speaking, and understanding English.
