The Arizona Supreme Court is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Staff Attorney to join our team.

About the Role

The Senior Staff Attorney will be responsible for reviewing cases subject to the Court's discretionary jurisdiction, researching, analyzing, and drafting timely memoranda about those cases. This position will also assist the Court on criminal and civil appeals, motions, certified questions, miscellaneous petitions, court rule amendments, and attorney admission and discipline cases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review cases subject to the Court's discretionary jurisdiction
  • Research, analyze, and draft timely memoranda about those cases
  • Assist the Court on criminal and civil appeals, motions, certified questions, miscellaneous petitions, court rule amendments, and attorney admission and discipline cases
  • Advise the duty justice on motions for stay and other matters
  • Draft orders for the Court's approval
  • Proofread memoranda
  • Staff and serve on court committees as assigned
  • Interact with and assist the justices, their judicial assistants, their clerks, and the Clerk's Office on all aspects of case administration and improving the Court's judicial operations
Requirements
  • Juris doctorate from an A.B.A.-accredited law school
  • Membership in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona
  • At least five years of experience in the active practice of law
  • Thorough understanding of the application of pertinent constitutional, statutory, regulatory law, and rules
  • Ability to distinguish legal issues from advocacy and analyze difficult and complex legal problems
  • Ability to draft timely memoranda and to discuss the same as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Significant experience in criminal law
  • At least five years of litigation experience in criminal civil, disciplinary, or administrative court tribunals involving research and analysis of complex legal and constitutional issues
