LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER TRAINEE

The Orange County Sheriff's Department is actively seeking applications for the position of Law Enforcement Officer Trainee. This recruitment will remain open until the department's staffing needs are fulfilled.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This recruitment aims to create an Open Eligible List to fill upcoming vacancies in this role. The established list may also be utilized to fill similar or lower classifications within the County of Orange.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Law Enforcement Officer Trainee, you will undergo a comprehensive 28-week training program at the P.O.S.T. Certified Orange County Sheriff's Regional Training Academy. Upon successful completion, you will advance to the position of Law Enforcement Officer I.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Sheriff's Department, being one of the largest in the nation, offers a fulfilling career path with diverse assignments. These include land, air, and maritime patrol, specialized investigative units, community engagement roles, and unique collateral duties. The department emphasizes a policing model that incorporates intelligence-led strategies and a community-oriented approach to law enforcement. To support this, extensive training and outreach opportunities are provided to foster relationships within the communities served.

MENTORING PROGRAM
The Mentoring Program is a voluntary initiative designed to prepare candidates for the academy. This program is available to those currently undergoing the background process with the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Participation is off-duty and focuses on academy protocols, memory work, and physical training. Mentoring staff will assess participant performance, which may influence selection for the Deputy Sheriff Trainee position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Skills Required:
  • Ability to comprehend and apply departmental policies, laws, and regulations related to law enforcement.
  • Proficient in writing clear and detailed reports.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Willingness to learn safe and proficient firearm handling.
Education and Experience: High school graduation or equivalent, or a degree from an accredited institution.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid California Driver License required by appointment date.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be at least 20 1/2 years old at the time of application.
  • No felony convictions or disqualifying offenses as per California Government Code.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.

TESTING PROCESS/SELECTION PROCEDURE
All applications will be screened to identify qualified candidates. Those who meet the qualifications will proceed to the written exam, followed by a physical agility test and an oral panel interview.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents will work in various environments, including correctional facilities, and must be prepared for potential contact with individuals who may exhibit violent behavior. Physical capabilities include the ability to lift, run, and perform various physical tasks essential for law enforcement duties.
