Purpose:

The Clinical Research Services (CRS) team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is responsible for facilitating the development, implementation, and coordination of oncology-focused trials. This team consists of nearly 200 staff members who work together to ensure the successful completion of these trials.

The CRS team provides study development and implementation assistance, submissions to the FDA, IRB processing, patient recruitment, study coordination, study-specific training, data collection, and specimen collection and processing.

This position offers a unique opportunity for a clinical research nursing professional to work in the community and screen/enroll patients in all cancer disease centers with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

The clinical research coordinator will work with physicians, nurses, other allied health professionals, and research staff to coordinate clinical research efforts provided at UPMC.

Key responsibilities include utilizing multiple communication methods to facilitate the effective conduct of research, managing the care of patients participating in research, and providing detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families.

The ideal candidate will have 2 years of clinical research experience, preferably in an oncology setting, or 2 years of RN experience. A bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred, and current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the practicing state is required.

Responsibilities:
1. Utilize multiple communication methods to facilitate the effective conduct of research.
2. Manage the care of patients participating in research, ensuring compliance with protocol procedures, assessments, and reporting requirements.
3. Provide detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to effectively guide them through the research study.
4. Utilize a variety of strategies to enhance recruitment while being mindful of the needs of diverse patient populations.
5. Demonstrate leadership in ensuring patient comprehension and safety during initial and ongoing informed consent discussions.
6. Facilitate compliance with the requirements of the research protocol and good clinical research practice while remaining cognizant of the needs of the diverse patient population.
7. Take personal responsibility in improving patient satisfaction with the quality of care and service provided.
8. Provide leadership to the research team in ensuring collection of source data and completion of documentation that validated the integrity of the research.
9. Take responsibilities for identifying his or her ongoing professional development needs and seeks resources and opportunities to meet those needs, such as through membership in nursing or research organizations.
10. Actively participates in the department's quality improvement efforts.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the practicing state is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is also required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
