Job Title: Sterile Processing Technician

Sterile Processing Technicians play a vital role in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for patients and staff. They are responsible for cleaning, assembling, wrapping, and sterilizing surgical packs and instruments using principles of Standard Precautions and Event Related Sterility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of instrument processing, sterilization, and biological monitoring.
  • Accurately handle and care for instruments/equipment, including selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function, identification, and assembly according to count sheet and preparation of sterilization.
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization for all reusable items.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
  • Items are correctly sorted according to heat sensitivity, immersibility, and delicate items upon arrival in the decontamination area.
  • Determine appropriate mode of sterilization for all reusable items.
  • Load, monitor, operate, and maintain different types of cleaning and sterilization equipment and machinery accurately and safely.
  • Identify, document, and report equipment and tools in need of repair and ensure maintenance is completed.
  • Correctly peel-pack supplies/instruments, wraps instruments for sterilization, inspects each instrument for use, function, completeness, and cleanliness.
  • Maintain work area, equipment, and instruments in clean working condition.
  • Anticipate and have available the necessary sterile equipment for posted cases.
  • Assist in maintaining records of all equipment and supplies, ordering of supplies as needed, and monitoring quality control and infection control standards.
Requirements:
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • One year of central processing experience preferred.
  • Certified by the Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) or must obtain within 1 year of hire date.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal skills.
  • Must have understanding of basic medical terminology.
Work Environment:

The physical demands for this position include: adequate vision, hearing, and repetitive motion. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee works in a well-lighted, heated, and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
