The Psychiatric Care Support Specialist will operate under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

During the designated work hours, the specialist will gather patient information, assist with personal care tasks, conduct point of care testing such as whole blood glucose, reposition and mobilize patients, and support the needs of assigned patients with an emphasis on their progress toward discharge, including during transitions within the acute care environment.

The Psychiatric Care Support Specialist enhances the availability of resources for patient care through collaboration with Material Coordinators for the use, stocking, and management of supplies.

The specialist contributes to the establishment and upkeep of a clean, organized, and safe care environment. They may also be required to provide companionship services for patients needing 1:1 observations.

The Psychiatric Care Support Specialist is accountable for aiding in the delivery of patient care provided by the caregiving team. They ensure that competent, compassionate patient care is consistently delivered to clients.

  • Gathers relevant data and information regarding the patient's health or condition, including vital signs, height and weight, and food and fluid intake and output.
  • Reports any abnormal findings to the RN and patient care team.
  • Engages in care planning and the nursing report process.
  • Incorporates patient/family rights to engage in decision-making about their care.
  • Utilizes standardized methods for keeping patients and families informed.
  • Provides personal care to patients including bathing, oral hygiene, and skin care.
  • Assists the patient with eating and hydration, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Integrates safe patient handling into basic restorative care such as ambulation, range of motion, and the use of assistive and prosthetic devices.
  • Implements strategies to maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment.
  • Demonstrates standard and transmission-based precautions and infection control practices.
  • Provides updates related to patient progress toward the achievement of goals and outcomes to the RN.
  • Documents all care in the patient record.
Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • 6 months related experience in a healthcare setting or completion of a certified nurse assistant course and/or experience as a paramedic or emergency technician is desired.
  • Honest, punctual, and performs the job in adherence to the highest standards of ethical conduct as defined by Albany Med Health System and the tenets of the profession.
  • Ability to communicate cooperatively and effectively with patients, family members, employees, and others.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands for various job functions, and occasionally required to sit, kneel, or crouch.
