This position is within a specialized oncology unit that provides care for adult patients facing various cancer diagnoses. The unit is dedicated to supporting patients through their treatment journeys, including those undergoing surgical procedures, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Additionally, it serves a significant portion of the community diagnosed with Sickle Cell disease.
Position Details
LOCATION: Lancaster, PA
HOURS: Part-time (24 hours per week), Night Shift (combination of 8 & 12-hour shifts), every third weekend, and every other holiday.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is a newly licensed RN or an RN with less than 15 months of experience. This role emphasizes the integration of essential nursing concepts, knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet the standards of competent nursing practice as defined by the American Nurses Association. The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice is responsible for providing direct patient care across a diverse age range, from infants to the elderly, while adhering to the competency domains of Continuous Quality Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, Leadership, and Person and Family Centered Care.
The Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice collaborates closely with the healthcare team to ensure coordinated care throughout the treatment continuum. This role focuses on developing the necessary skills to deliver individualized care that considers the physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age-appropriate needs of patients.
As a Clinical Nurse 1 New to Practice/Apprentice, the individual will seek guidance from experienced clinicians and benefit from constructive feedback to enhance their ability to manage increasingly complex patient cases. Compliance with all regulatory standards and organizational goals is essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Qualified candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform the following duties:
- Incorporate the mission, vision, and values of Lancaster General Health into patient care planning.
- Function effectively as both an independent and collaborative member of the healthcare team.
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, focusing on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions, and adapt care plans based on evolving patient needs.
- Analyze assessment data to formulate culturally sensitive and age-appropriate care plans.
- Implement care knowledgeably and coordinate patient care across various disciplines.
- Provide leadership by communicating care standards and supporting team members.
- Demonstrate a commitment to privacy, quality, respect, service, and teamwork.
- Delegate and supervise tasks among team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Educate patients on health practices and treatment options.
- Continuously enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practices through the use of technology.
- Manage dynamic situations by coordinating with appropriate healthcare team members and documenting events.
- Engage in process improvement initiatives to enhance nurse-patient relationships and operational efficiency.
- Complete mandatory training related to age-specific needs and interpersonal skills.
- Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to evidence-based practices and reporting safety concerns.
- Seek opportunities for professional development and mentoring within the workplace.
- Participate in performance evaluations of peers and team members.
- Fulfill on-call responsibilities as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIRED:
- Current RN Licensure from the PA Board of Nursing or a Temporary Practice Permit.
- Completion of the Nurse Residency Program is mandatory for all Clinical Nurse 1 RNs.
- CPR Certification from the American Heart Association is required within 30 days of hire.
- Must be a healthcare provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other health insurance programs.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred, especially for Magnet designated RN positions.
