Description

In this role, you will work under minimal supervision to execute fleet maintenance services, which include the upkeep and repair of various vehicles, light trucks, small engines, and both light and heavy machinery. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks related to your assigned duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are indicative of the work that may be performed. The absence of specific duties does not exclude them if they are related or logically assigned to this position.
  • Engage in the maintenance and repair of municipal vehicles, light trucks, and small engines, including lawn care equipment and heavy machinery.
  • Replace parts on vehicles and machinery; conduct safety inspections on all equipment.
  • Carry out Texas State Safety Inspections.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks on vehicles and machinery, including lubrication and oil changes.
  • Utilize and maintain a variety of fleet maintenance tools and equipment, such as hand tools, air tools, lifting devices, and service trucks.
  • Execute all tasks according to established methods and techniques, adhering to relevant standards and specifications.
  • Assist in all garage operations, including the testing of equipment on the road.
  • Follow safe work practices and procedures diligently.
  • Respond to public inquiries courteously; provide information relevant to your area of responsibility; resolve complaints efficiently.
  • Oversee the Mechanic I in the absence of supervisory personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of:
  • Operations, services, and activities involved in a fleet maintenance program.
  • Methods and techniques for vehicle and equipment upkeep.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Basic principles and procedures of record-keeping.
  • Operational characteristics of vehicle maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
  • Independently carry out fleet maintenance tasks.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
  • Safely and effectively operate a variety of garage tools and equipment.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
  • Learn and implement new vehicle service and repair procedures.
  • Understand and utilize service manuals.
  • Deliver equipment, vehicles, and parts as needed.
  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.
Requirements

Education, Training, and Experience:

Completion of high school or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in vehicle and equipment maintenance or a related field. A minimum of one year of relevant fleet maintenance experience is required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

A valid State driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Preferred qualifications include possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Texas Commercial driver's license and ASE and/or EVT certifications.

Shop environment; work around heavy equipment, working at heights, exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, and potentially hazardous chemicals and fumes.
