Key Responsibilities
  • Flight Planning and Coordination
    • Route planes for operating under instrument flight rules to control centers and for operating under visual flight rules to stations in the vicinity of destination airports.
    • Provide pilots with meteorological, navigational, and other information necessary for planning and conducting a safe flight.
  • Air Traffic Control and Safety
    • Relay traffic control and other instructions concerned with aircraft safety to pilots, including information on airfield surface conditions, operational status of airfield navigational aids, and available landing fields.
    • Monitor radio aids to navigation, such as range stations, fan markers, and voice communication facilities, and notify air personnel of their availability.
  • Communication and Record-Keeping
    • Communicate effectively with pilots of all levels of experience in a variety of situations.
    • Maintain written records of messages transmitted and received.
  • Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs)
    • Develop, disseminate, and monitor the currency of NOTAMs providing information on significant aeronautical conditions.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • High School diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited military or FAA Airfield Management/Flight Service school or program.
    • Possess one to three years' experience in an airport management field at a civilian or military Flight Service installation.
  • Knowledge and Skills
    • Possess knowledge of Air Force, DoD, and FAA flight directives.
    • Detailed knowledge of procedures related to flight handling, routing, airways, and airspace structures.
    • General knowledge of the performance characteristics of a wide variety of aircraft.
    • Ability to coordinate actions with other specialists and related air traffic facilities.
  • Physical and Mental Demands
    • Typical airfield station or terminal office environment with no unusual hazards.
    • Constant sitting while using the computer terminal.
    • Ability to discern all colors of the spectrum.
