Firefighter Trainee

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Firefighter Intern at General Dynamics NASSCO. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to observe and assist in emergency medical care and fire responses, while gaining hands-on training and experience in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist and support fire and emergency calls, including laying hoses, carrying and setting up ladders, and using fire equipment
- Conduct and administer first aid
- Observe and assist in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections
- Participate in drills and training activities
- Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned
- Currently enrolled in Fire Science classes or recently completed a fire academy
- Basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered
- Current EMT and CPR certificate
- Ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems
- Ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications, which successfully supports other firefighters, employees and management
The work environment is dynamic and requires the ability to work in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. The physical demands of the job include:
- Work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair
- Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery
- Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding
- Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of weight
- Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring NASSCO's Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented. Additionally, they will be responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO's Fire Management System.
